The Judging Process

Overview

People often claim that script analysis is not subjective, but that is only true to a certain extent: screenwriting is more art than science, and thus open to interpretation. Of course, there are some obviously bad scripts and some obviously good scripts but when the basics (like solid structure and natural dialogue) are there, it often comes down to taste. Throw in a genre like comedy, and you add another layer of subjectivity.

We aim to be as objective as possible - as we are sure all readers set out to be - and have created that we think is the best system for selecting the winning films as fairly and inexpensively as possible, but are fully aware that subjectivity cannot be completely ruled out. If your script does not progress, we will give you an idea of why it did not, but keep in mind Bill Goldman's old chestnut: "Nobody knows anything".

The First Round

In order to keep submission costs as low as possible and ensure submission fees go towards production costs (rather than paying readers), the one-pager is used to select 50-100 semi-finalists. Read more on submission documents.

Semi-Finalists

During the semi-final round, scripts are read and marked along the lines of industry standards (eg hook, structure, charecterisation, dialogue etc). From the semi-finalists, ten scirpts are selected as finalists..
